The wealthy Birling family are enjoying dinner when they are suddenly interrupted by a police officer (the great Alastair Sim) who brings them the news of a girl's suicide. His questioning suggests that all of them had a connection with the girl and each of them could have been involved in her death. But who is this mysterious inspector and what can he want with them?
