The Sky Is Falling (aka Il Cielo Cade) (2000)
Summer 1944, in an elegant villa in Tuscany
In the summer of 1944, Penny and her younger sister Baby, orphaned by a car accident, are taken to live with their mother's sister in an elegant villa in the Tuscan countryside. The aunt is married to a handsome German Jew, a lover of music and the arts.
The entire story is viewed through Penny's eyes. It is with her we explore the fascinating world which revolves around the island of happiness formed by the villa and its unconventional guests, as well as the surrounding rustic life, which depends on the villa.
The film portrays the simple events, which take place from the summer of 1944 until the tragic conclusion of the War. These include the friendships established with the peasant children, school, religious problems, the growing awareness of a cruel, inescapable reality, the discovery of the first furtive contacts of love and the magnetism of Uncle Wilhelm (an idealistic intellectual and advocate of justice).
