Lost In La Mancha (2002)
A tantalizing memorial to what could have been that comes right from the very heart of the action, the hugely acclaimed Lost in La Mancha offers a frank, often hilarious and frequently painful account of some of the disasters, natural and otherwise, that befell director Terry Gilliam's attempt to film The Man who killed Don Quixote.
Despite an all-star cast including Johnny Depp, Vanessa Paradis and Jean Rochefort, and one of cinema's most inventive directors at the helm (Brazil, The Fisher King, Twelve Monkeys), Gilliam's ambitious project was forced to shut down after only six days of production. Featuring surviving footage from the film, a flood of biblical proportions and extensive, intimate interviews with a compelling animated Gilliam and the rest of his crew, directors Keith Fulton and Louis Pepe (who worked with Gilliam on The Hamster Factor) were granted unprecedented access for what must be the only 'unmaking' of in the history of cinema.
Easily eclipsing Les Blank's Burden of Dreams and Fax Bahr and George Hickenlooper's Hearts of Darkness, Lost in La Mancha stands as the greatest and most illuminating work yet on the perils and pitfalls of heroic film-making.
