When Stella Rode, the schoolmaster's wife at Carnes School, sends a letter to her friend Alisa Brimley predicting her own death she has no idea that it will become tragic reality. Alisa's first instinct is to contact her former colleague in Intelligence George Smiley. Smiley begins to investigate the letter which names Rode's husband the murderer, though Rode's unbreakable alibi complicates the seemingly simple case. And when another murder is committed, it rapidly exposes a thick web of tension that burrows deep into the heart of the enclosed society of the elite boy's college, exposing secrets that haunt the pillars of the establishment.
