Beijing Bicycle (2001)
This deceptively simple modern-day fable, set in China's fastest growing city, tells the dramatic tale of two very different teenage boys: one a simple peasant lad (Guei), new to the big city; and the other an overly ambitious schoolboy (Jian).
The two boys' paths cross in an unexpected way when Guei suspects Jian of stealing his bicycle (which he desperately needs to do his job as a bicycle messenger). Reminiscent of the Italian 1948 neorealist classic The Bicycle Thief, Beijing Bicycle has its own distinctive contemporary style, whilst making a strong political statement about the corrupting power of capitalism and the vital nature of human pride and dignity.
