Synopsis:
Based on real events, the film follows young musicians, Ashkan and Negar, who promised a gig in London and embark on a frantic mission to assemble a backing band. The couple have recently served prison terms for breaching the ban on 'Western and decadent music', and for Negar, these activities are particularly dangerous: as a female musician, unauthorised public performances can carry savage penalties. Now, they face a search for the elusive and costly paperwork that will permit them to leave for Europe.
Teaming up with promoter and bootlegger Nader, their search takes them into Tehran and a vibrant underground culture of rappers, rockers, electro-artists and singer-songwriters who risk arrest to perform Western songs overlaid with their own politicised lyrics. But as Negar and Ashkan try to convince others to follow their lead, the risks that they are taking become all too apparent.

Interesting but not Ghobadi's best - No One Knows About Persian Cats review by TE

Spoiler Alert
05/03/2020

This is a very different film to the two earlier masterpieces that established Bahman Ghobadi's credentials as a brilliant director ('A Time For Drunken Horses' and 'Turtles Can Fly').

'No One Knows About Persian Cats' takes us on a picaresque trip through the illicit popular music scene in Tehran. The storyline is loose and there is little sense of a context for the characters. The music and its intolerant oppression by the Islamic fundamentalist state are the film's only real concerns. As such it is a movie with significant documentary interest.

Towards the end I was losing interest in the parade of musicians, but the film's final sequence delivers a real jolt (no spoilers...).
