The Social Network

Self-congratulatory and superficial

(Edit) 13/08/2011

The blurb advertising this film is I think one of the most misleading I've ever read. It's not only that the film is superficial, it's just so dull. The plot is so thin. The events lack analysis. The characters are cardboard cut outs who talk very quickly presumably in a desperate attempt to persuade us they're so bright. I think this film has been cobbled together PDQ to cash in on the popularity of Facebook. It's a genuine mystery to me how it won an Oscar.

The Twilight Saga: New Moon

Tweenager pap

(Edit) 06/01/2011

This is teenage, sulky pap. My gf, who liked it, told me I wasn't playing the game when I pointed out that if the vampire is over a 100 years old it's a bit pervy that he dates a teenager. Really dreadful nonsense.

A Single Man

Heart warming

(Edit) 06/01/2011

This is a good film. It is about love and loss. To characterise it is as "gay and lesbian" is misleading.

Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner

Transcendant

(Edit) 23/09/2010

If you do everything right then sometimes I think the film transcends perhaps the vision the film-makers aspired to. Or maybe the story itself is sufficiently powerful that if you just tell it, and get the details right, it becomes something in its own right. The film seems both modern and ancient. It has a sense that it was actually filmed there, a bit like The Seventh Seal feels as if it was shot in the Middle Ages. They're just acting but they're acting something more powerful than themselves.
