Journey to Italy

Overrated

(Edit) 22/06/2008

The film seemed ideal: Rossellini, Bergman and Italy. A couple travels to Italy for family business and find that their marriage is falling apart. Unfortunately I found the acting lousy - the actors were asked Rossellini to improvise and clearly were not made for it - the direction non-existent, the photography appalling, the dialogues flat, the plot...is there a plot? The film is boring from beginning to end and you wonder why some critics hailed it as a great film. Watch it only if you want to see with your own eyes how bad it is.

Born Into Brothels

Moving and real

(Edit) 22/06/2008

Photographer and director Zana Briski travels to Calcutta's red district and encounters the children who live in this squalor among drugs, prostitution and violence. Most of them are destined to end up working on the street as well. Fascinated by this woman taking pictures of them, the children are taught how to take photographs and are given a chance to have a different life through education. The film is inspiring and beautifully shot. It will bring many tears to your eyes and may inspire you to think that we can all make a difference.
