The Good Wife: Series 1

Why did I not know about this series sooner?

(Edit) 07/07/2017

I hope you'll forgive my cynicism but the central character here is a woman. A woman who's world has been turned upside down when she finds out her high profile husband has been deceiving her and who is working hard to deal with the fall out while having to go back to work (in public view) and juggle the parenting of her teenage kids. Could that be why it didn't get much hype?! It's definitely glamorous fiction rather than a realism but hey, why not?! It's very well done and Julianna Margulies is superb. She's mostly written as a well rounded character who is easy to empathise with but, for me, she can be a bit too good at everything. Maybe she becomes more flawed as it progresses. Whatever, I'm thoroughly enjoying my new found escapist pleasure so far. 5 stars.

The Lunchbox

Lovely film but only the foreign dialogue is subtitled

(Edit) 09/08/2015

I am deaf and rely on subtitles. The language is both Hindi and English and as the information says, the subtitles are in English. It hadn't occurred to me that they would only be on screen during the Hindi dialogue leaving me completely in the dark as to what was happening for half the film. My hearing partner had to pause it at the end of every sentence and repeat it back to me which ruined the film for him also. I have to agree with all of the other reviewers and would have happily given this film five stars had it not been for my own difficulty with it. I have notified Cinema Paradiso of the problem but, strictly speaking, the information already given is accurate, hence this warning - D/deaf and HoH members please be aware!

Calvary

It isn't a comedy!

(Edit) 15/04/2015

I have no idea why it has been classed as such. There is undoubtedly an element of black humour to be found but its not the predominant tone of the film at all. I would describe this as a theatrical piece in that it is a thought provoking study rather than a tale with an unfolding plot. It focuses on the betrayal and alienation of a priest committed to his calling in a parish of troubled inhabitants. Death and forgiveness are some of the themes explored and there is recurring focus on victims of abuse within the Catholic church which, among other things, prevents this from being a merely black and white allegory. Personally I found it a really interesting film, brilliantly acted and I'm glad that I saw it but if you're after a comedy in the style of The Guard then look elsewhere!

The Lego Movie

Don't get it!

(Edit) 10/02/2015

We gave up on this half way through! I'm not sure which audience the film is aimed at. In fact that may well be why we thought it didn't work. Too silly for adults and too many wordy or topical 'jokes' for kids. In short, trying too hard and pleasing.. well not us for sure. Really can't understand why its rated so highly. Not a patch on the wonderful Up or Despicable Me for example and certainly not better than Toy Story as another reviewer would have it.
