Superbly written and directed: darkly twisted humour and snappy dialogue with interludes of shocking violence (at least for 1994). Or is it the other way round? Tarantino has never reached these heights since and neither have most of the excellent cast.
Jim Carrey is a great actor but he's badly let down by the plot in this one. The film starts well and the twists and turns in the story make you think that some amazing revelation is just round the corner - but the ending was a let down. It could have been a good film if someone had re-written the last half hour and gone for a less obvious trick ending.
The preview gives a hint of the film it could have been. Despite a famous director, good individual performances from the actors and powerful historical and emotional material somehow it just didn't hang together. Too slow at the start and then too much history crammed into too little time may have been one of the problems.
