Changeling

I hope Gran Tourino is better than this!

(Edit) 02/04/2009

I was very disappointed by this film. It was very melodramatic and cliched in places, and dragged on unnecessarily. It was also very heavy handed with it's themes of police corruption and justice etc. It was self-important; and suggestive of an awards baiting film, with grander intentions, than the material deserved.

The initial intriguing idea, is soon replaced by an average narrative showing scenes we've seen a dozen times before in other films, and could have been skipped over. Overall a very ordinary, and by the numbers film. Couldn't they have been more respectful to a true story?! And not simply prised it into typical thriller conventions?

It reminded me to some extent of some self-important films from the 50s and 60s that the Airplane! team used to spoof. Is Clint Eastwood as a director now that old fashioned? With due respect for much of his back catalogue, to me this is a serious mis-step.

The Silence of Lorna

Another good film

If you liked the Dardenne brothers other films such as Rosetta and L'enfant, no doubt you will like this.

Demanding but compelling European cinema.

Martyrs

Stays with you.

(Edit) 01/07/2009

My thoughts are similar to the other reviews. As brutal as film can get.

Not as profound as Irreversible, but way better than Hostel and all that so called torture porn.

Watch it if you dare!

George Carlin: Complaints and Grievances

A comic genius.

(Edit) 10/12/2008

Not so well known in this country- he is recognisable from Bill & Teds Excellent Adventure, and some of Kevin Smith's films.

This made for TV live performance, is short and sweet at only 55 mins; but is very funny and clever. Dying this year in 2008, George Carlin left us way too soon. It's a shame more of his stand up isn't available.

Zack and Miri Make a Porno

Better than Jersey Girl!

(Edit) 07/03/2009

Funny, in a very crude way. But it's also very sentimental. Rent, if you like Kevin Smiths' films- or 80s films in general, because it seems to be inspired by films from that era.

The Dream Life of Angels

The Dreamlife of Cinema

(Edit) 11/03/2009

Brilliant. One of my favourite films of all time! Beautifully written, performed, and photographed. It has a downbeat tone, and deals with complex/ emotional and adult themes; but if you like realistic and powerful cinema, you will regard this highly.
