The Young Victoria

Disappointing

(Edit) 10/09/2009

This is a nice movie to watch when you have nothing more substantial to watch. I found the flashing about from one scene to another rather irritating.

I am afraid they needed to try just that much harder to make a truly wonderful movie.

Lemon Tree

The other side of the story?

(Edit) 10/09/2009

Brilliantly simple but effective.

I also have no idea whether this is a general indication of issues but I think it is extremely possible. This simply shows what is a "need" seen from one perspective, is a gross abuse to another.

This film left me feeling haunted and spent.

The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas

Simple but gripping

(Edit) 07/09/2009

This is a very simple, yet powerful film. If this was a stage production, the sets will have cost relatively little.

I liked it for its simplicity and clarity of messages from the characters. I disliked it in one or two places where the Commandant and his lieutenant seems to overplay aggression somewhat.I am pleased I have seen this film as it is time well spent.

Manon of the Spring

As good as the First

(Edit) 07/09/2009

This film is as good as the first in the duo. (Jean de Florette). I was concerned that it may not be as good because Gerard Depardieu did not feature in it as he did in the first, but that turned out to be no so. Although the plot seemed a bit predictable, it did not bother me as the film remained gripping

Downfall

Wow to Bruno Ganz

(Edit) 07/09/2009

Bruno Ganz is simply brilliant in the role of "Mein Fuhrer". I have read reports that a large chunk of the German population was concerned that this film portrays Hitler in a personal light and in a manner that he becomes far too much an object of sympathy. I did not experience that although I do feel that I got into the heads of the few, during the last hours in the bunker.
