From relegation candidates to promotion via the play-offs at the Millennium Stadium; the speed of the Seasiders progression in confirming their immediate return to the third tier of English football in 2001 was simply astonishing. Steve McMahon's side was 23rd at one point in September. They subsequently lost 7-0 to Barnet and were dumped out of the FA Cup by non-league Yeovil. But steadily they climbed the table. A prolific 50-goal partnership between John Murphy and Brett Ormerod steered them upwards, aided by the guile of the ageless Paul Simpson and the enthusiasm of a young Richie Wellens. In Cardiff, Blackpool were behind within seconds, but twice they came back to level the match before securing an emphatic 4-2 win, the first step on their accent up the league ladder.
