The US team, led by Paul Azinger, were coming off three successive defeats. It was crucial they stop the rot. But Europe, captained by Nick Faldo - Europe's all time points record holder looked to the favourites. Faldo's team, a blend of experience and youth, seemed more than match for an American side that contained six rookies. But the Ryder Cup is Matchplay, head to head competitionagainst a backdrop of highly patriotic support. At a Pep rally held earlier in the week Azinger recruited the US fans as his team's 13th man.
