Rise and fall - 500 Days of Summer review by CP Customer

Spoiler Alert
30/01/2010

A pleasant indie themed romance spread unsurprisingly over 500 days. It charts the flow of the relationship with moments of fun, laughter and disappointment. The film is a refreshing change from gutter humour or rom-coms and manages to find its own distinctive level. The indie theme is maintained throughout with plentiful references, t-shirts and a solid soundtrack. The main couple gel well together and help to maintain interest, although Zooey is being typecast nowadays and needs to forge a new identity.

500 Days of Summer review by Melissa Orcine - Cinema Paradiso

This is a movie that opens with a tagline “This is not a love story. This is a story about love.” The story revolves around two individuals, Tom Hansen and Summer Finn, who work in a greeting card company and eventually hangout together. Tom believes in true love and only a special person can make his life happy. Contrarily, Summer doesn’t believe in true love but this doesn’t hinder her from having a relationship with Tom. The events happening within a span of 500 days forms the central theme of the movie.

The story is delivered in a non-linear narrative, yet the events are portrayed in a perfect flow without any ambiguity. The relationship between Summer and Tom is portrayed perfectly. Some of the usual clichés which we normally see in feel-good romantic movies are fortunately avoided. The idea of a girl who doesn’t believe in love yet has no problems in starting a relationship is delivered effectively. Credit goes to the director for narrating the story with plenty of interesting features that include a few sensual love making scenes.

The performance of the lead pair has to be mentioned here. Zooey Deschanel as Summer does a perfect job and her expressions are quite good. Joseph Gordon-Levitt as Tom has a big role of portraying different expressions on different circumstances. The expression of Levitt in the final scenes where Summer breaks up with Tom is noteworthy. Other characters in the film like Tom’s sister, his friends, and colleagues have done their job well.

Speaking about the downside, the much needed humor in this kind of movies is a bit lacking. There are some funny instances where you can smile a bit but the movie would have been more brilliant if humor has a much powerful role in it. Other than that, the wonderful narration makes the movie interesting and enjoyable.
