Lionel Barrymore gives an Oscar-winning performance as tosspot San Francisco attorney Stephen Ashe, who successfully defends mobster Ace Wilfong against a murder rap. After the case -- to Ashe's dismay -- his free-spirited daughter takes up with Wilfong, and their dangerous liaison soon leads to a killing and another trial. Leslie Howard plays Shearer's jilted fiancé in director Clarence Brown's engaging melodrama.
