Luo (Chen Kun) and Ma (Liu Ye), two bourgeois young men from the city are sent to a remote, culturally barren mountain village for re-education in Maoist principles. Discovering a hidden cache of books by western writers such as Flaubert, Dumas and Balzac, the pair transmit their love of art and literature to the knowledge hungry local seamstress (the commanding Xun Zhou, Beiling Bicycle, Suzhou River), with whom they both promptly fall in love.

Balzac And The Little Chinese Seamstress review by JD
Political, but romantic with sublime scenery

The stunning setting of remote mountainous grandeur makes the very plain Maoist way of life seem strangely appealing. The conversion of the bourgeois to peasants is an unspoken stupidity of this regime which now appears ridiculous but worryingly had an almost self-perpetuating support. The cultural revolution is a difficult plot to make into a compelling film but I was utterly captivated by this serene and charismatic film.

Thought provoking and beautiful

Enjoyed this movie greatly. It's thought provoking and beautiful. It's a coming of age drama, a romance, a story set in troubled times and an insight into rural China a few decades ago.
