Rent Bleak Moments (1971)

First released in 1971, Mike Leigh's debut feature film is a haunting study of a young woman's isolation that first introduced his unique natural talent and met with great critical acclaim. The Times concluded "it is a real delight to be able to welcome a new film by a talented new British film-maker which is absolutely unlike anything else" Sylvia leads a very quiet life caring for her mentally ill sister Hilda but both sisters' urgent longing for companionship is threatened by their inability to interact with other people socially. Featuring a performance of great depth from Anne Raitt, and balancing heightened realism with moments of real humour, it is one of the key films in the development of British cinema.
