Defiance review by Jawbreaker
Great story, badly executed

Defiance is based on actual events during World War II, where Polish Jews under the leadership of the Bielski brothers, survived and prospered in a forest. Hollywood has departed from the truth in certain areas, but it remains a modern day twist on the ancient Robin Hood tale. This congregation rescued Jews and never turned anyone away, taking from the rich to feed the poor. Somehow they managed to sustain huge numbers, whilst surviving under constant threat of attack. The main attraction is the story, which shows Jews in a new light, taking up arms and being more aggressive than we’ve seen before. The main actors put in good shifts, but the script quite often falls into bad habits, becoming confused and predictable. At times this is a war film, other moments a tale of family or newfound love. The end result is a film that is unjustifiably too long and required more focus from Edward Zwick. Those expecting plenty of action or Schindlers List will be disappointed.
