Rent Genova (2008)

A haunting eerie journey to a place where souls stir and hearts go to mend themselves, "Genova" is the dark, brooding voyage of discovery for one family, torn apart by tragedy. With its sun drenched vistas and shadow-cloaked alleyways, the Italian town of Genova provides a fresh start for Joe and his two young daughters. Seeking new lives after the sudden death of their mother they’re all looking for something. As Joe throws himself into study and possible new relationships, the teenage Kelly loses herself in the underbelly of this mysterious new world. But it’s youngest daughter Mary who is affected by this mystifying and alluring paradise. And then she sees the ghosts of her mother wandering the streets.

Quite disappointing really, the film dwells mostly the family trying to lay down roots in a new country. For the most part this involves getting lost in back streets, sunbathing or swimming. The actual emotional loss is never fully explored and the deceased visits are left open to interpretation. Those looking for a stimulating family drama should check out Tokyo Sonata instead.
