Simon Pegg stars as Sidney Young, a gate-crashing British journalist who loves exposing the shallowness of the celebrity world, yet desperately wants to join it. When he accepts an offer from renowned editor Clayton Harding (Jeff Bridges) to write for an ultra-chic magazine in Manhattan, Sidney finally gets to rub elbows with A-list celebrities but always manages to rub them the wrong way. His fellow writer, Alison Olsen (Kirsten Dunst), is powerless to stop Sidney when he sets his lustful sites on beautiful starlet Sophie Maes (Megan Fox). But when Sophie's publicist (Gillian Anderson) makes him a tempting offer, Sidney is finally poised to conquer the Big Apple or suffer the biggest humiliation of his life.

Fails to Make Friends

We follow the potential transformation of rogue hack Sidney Young as fame and celebrity comes calling in the Big Apple. Will he give into the demands of the magazine and publicist by playing ball, giving them the final say on each article? Or will he stay true to his convictions exposing fake and shallow celebrities, thereby keeping his dignity intact? I’ve never read the book, but the film version is pretty confused. At times it tries to be a romantic comedy, other moments a satire on Hollywood or failing those, it resorts to gutter humour. Really, it is a shame, as it kicks off well, before getting stuck in neutral. Pegg is likeable here but seems restricted by his character, I wonder how much he was allowed to bring to the role? Megan Fox plays the starlet with ease; she is after all a pinup already, yet its Anderson and Dunst who benefit most from the script. The whole experience just doesn’t gel, becoming a roller coaster of good and bad. You’re left to wonder what could have been with a little more thought and execution. At least the gag reel will put a smile on your face.
