I was somewhat disappointed by Milk, given the plaudits its received since last year. Based on a remarkable true-life story, I found the voice over at times interfering and the first half of the film plods along, when it really needs focusing. Things certainly pick up when Harvey becomes successful in local politics yet it remains a mixed bag. The production team did a great job capturing the San Francisco era and his legacy shows how much we’ve developed as a society since.

The look of the film is great, the pace and language have their high points and Penn is at his chameleon best. Sadly overall the movie is just a little too cosy to feel like a true reflection of the times.
