Rent Orange County (2002)

Rising young stars Colin Hanks and Schuyler Fisk head up an outstanding cast including Jack Black, Catherine O'Hara, John Lithgow, Harold Ramis and Lily Tomlin in this outrageous coming-of-age comedy. Shaun Brumder (Hanks) is content to be a bright, talented, but unfocused Southern California surf slacker - until the day he discovers a novel by acclaimed author Martin Skinner. Inspired, he suddenly realizes his life's ambition: to leave behind mind-numbing Orange County and study creative writing with Skinner at Stanford University. But after being denied enrollment due to an admissions error, Shaun is forced to seek help not only from his girlfriend Ashley (Fisk) but also his hopelessly dysfunctional parents (O'Hara & Lithgow), stoner brother Lance (Black), and a host of hilarious circumstances to make his dream of escaping his hometown nightmare a reality.

Orange County review by Shatner's Bassoon

Dull, unfunny and badly acted.

Orange County has slightly more intelligence than your average teen comedy, but unfortunately, it's just not very funny. Writer Mike White has proved that he can produce clever screenplays, (Chuck & Buck, The Good Girl, School Of Rock), but Orange County is like some half baked leftover he quickly finished off for the cash. However, the worst thing about this film is the cast. It's a mix of the untalented offspring of Hollywood A-listers and ageing 80's B-list actors, (John Lithgow, Catherine O'Hara, Harold Ramis, Lily Tomlin, Chevy Chase, Kevin Kline) either looking boost their flagging careers or to add a few bucks to the retirement fund. Colin Hanks (son of Tom) and Schuyler Fisk (daughter of Sissy Spacek) are ok, but neither has the charisma or acting ability of their parents. The result is a film that is unfunny and totally charmless.
