Rent Panic (2000)

Middle-aged and disillusioned Alex feels his life is 'dead'. Rather like his 'clients', in fact. For unbeknown to his devoted wife and adorable little son. Alex is a hitman. From boyhood, his gruff old dad trained Alex to kill. First squirrels, then humans. But now the job is taking its toll, and the stress levels soar as Alex meets Sarah. She's gorgeous, sexually adventurous and half his age. She's also the catalyst that's about to blow apart his world of twisted family loyalties and carefully constructed deceit.

Panic review by Shatner's Bassoon

Gripping and haunting

William H Macy plays a Alex, a man who's increasingly becoming tormented by being part of the family business, which just happens to be hired killers. Tired of his job and tormented by the thought that his own son may end up being indoctrinated into the family business, Alex decides to seek the help of a psychiatrist (John Ritter). In the psychiatrists' waiting room, he meets a friendly, neurotic young woman, Sarah (Neve Campbell), and slowly becomes involved with her, which leads to an affair. The film brilliantly interweaves the story of Alex's past, his future, his struggles with his family, his torrid affair with Sarah, and the relationship with his therapist. Though quite low key, the entire film gives a tense feeling throughout, which really contributes to storyline, and the last ten minutes are both haunting and compelling. If you're a fan of William H Macy, this is a must-see film and probably his best performance since 'Fargo'.
