Micky is a tough, loudmouth but lovable 13 year-old who lives with his younger brother and sister at his Grandmother's (Brenda Fricker) house in a run-down Dublin suburb. When, one day, a meteorite lands in their backyard, the kids believe it is a miracle - a message sent down to them by their recently deceased parents.
Pete (Mike Myers) was their parents' best friend and is still blamed by the family for their death. A recovering junkie, he's promised to raise the orphaned children, but has his own problems avoiding mobsters intent on debt recovery.
When these unlikely allies attempt to retrieve the meteor from wealthy scientist (Alfred Molina) their lives converge in a funny, thrilling and bittersweet film which shows that sometimes the most precious things in life can be found in your own backyard.
