Having been unable to live with her mother, Berit has been institutionalised for many years. She is released from the institutions she has inhabited to the streets of the harbour slums of Gothenburg. Forced into a job in a job conditional on her living with her mother she is a young woman in deep suicidal despair. One night she escapes her mother’s overbearing apartment to go to a dance and, in an effort to lighten her spirits, she meets a sailor and tells her new found confidante of her troubled past. She begins to spend more time with him and begins to meet others where she discovers she is not the only one with problems. Inspired by the Italian neo-realist Roberto Rossellini this uncompromising tale touches on issues that are just as controversial today as 60 years ago – illegal abortion and the consequences of a limited social welfare system. Available for the first time, this powerful and evocative film bears many of the touches that would come to define the work of one of the world’s most celebrated directors.
