'Rudy' documents New York Mayor Rudolph Giuliani's life from his days as a brash young attorney for the Justice Department under Ronald Reagan in Washington DC through his ascent into the public eye when he is appointed as a US District Attorney in New York, his beloved city. Using the powers of his office, Giuliani is determined to stamp out corruption at every level. In 1989 he enters the Mayoral race but suffers a painful defeat by an incredibly thin margin. Undeterred however, he runs for a second time and beats his rival Dinkins. As mayor Giuliani soon develops a love/hate relationship with the people of New York and although he wins a second term in office he endures a series of political fights with people from both inside and outside of his inner circle. As Giuliani's second term as mayor comes to an end his chapter in New York City history seems destined to come quietly to an end, until he is unexpectedly thrust into the spotlight when tragedy struck New York on September 11th 2001.
