Senator Dicky Pilager (Chris Cooper) is nervous, inarticulate and grammatically challenged - perfectly qualified, says his conniving father, to become Colorado State Governor. So the hapless senator hits the campaign trail, backed by his domineering dad's money and influence. Everything goes according to plan until a fishing trip for the cameras captures young Dicky reeling in a mangled corpse. An unfortunate coincidence or a dastardly plot to destroy the Pilagers' political ambitions? Campain manager Chuck Raven (Richard Dreyfuss) hires a down-at-heel private eye to uncover the truth.... but the investigation uncovers much more
