Soderbergh takes his clean cut style into the world of Science Fiction with Solaris. This is very much in the vein of Silent Running and 2001 in terms of atmosphere and pacing. The events unfold when Clooney arrives onboard the missing vessel, these will keep you enthralled. The film looks great, the sets are fabulous and most of the effects are more physical than CGI, so you're left with the cast to carry the film with their performances. Clooney excels in what is his most challenging role, as his character faces a remarkable situation. A timeless example of science fiction, I'm sure this film will look just as impressive in fifty years time.

The words of the Time Out review in the synopsis above are right, this film is extremely stylish. Style alone isn't enough of course and Solaris is a reasonable effort from Soderbergh although it's far from his best work. The tone is eerie and tense, and it borrows a lot from the likes of Alien, 2001: A Space Odyssey and Event Horizon. Clooney turns in a decent performance and is well supported by the rest of the cast. Probably not the best of its genre but well worth a watch.
