Rent Stalingrad (1993)

It seems that in every decade, there are one or two war pictures that become classics and set the tone for new excellence in filmmaking. In the fifties it was Paths of Glory; in the sixties Patton; in the seventies, Apocalypse Now, in the eighties it was Platoon and Das Boot; and in the nineties, it is Stalingrad that will make film history. From the same production team that was responsible for the great war classic Das Boot, this film brings to the screen the story of the bloodiest battle in the history of warfare - the fight for Stalingrad was the turning point in the war for the Germans. They never recovered from this devastating defeat. But like Das Boot, Stalingrad's emphasis is not simply on the battle but on certain young men who fought in that war - their hopes, their fears, their stories.

Stalingrad review by PV

Great German War Film spoilt by dubbing

This is a great war film about a turning point in the war - the Germans' defeat at Stalingrad which, crucially, stopped the Nazis moving south to the middle east and seizing the oil that was partly powering the British war effort. The film does not flinch in its portrayal of brutal Nazis and brutal Russians too. It shows war as a messay amoral business............................. Sadly, this is ruined by the fact that the film is dubbed - not very well somtimes - and subtitles are not even given for passages of writing in German! Fortunately, I can understand a bit of German! Subtitles throughout would have been far far better - I hope to watch this film again with subtitles at some stage.
