George Stroud, (Ray Milland) is an ambitious executive editor at Crimeways magazine, under the ownership of the ruthless media magnate Earl Janoth (Charles Laughton). When Janoth kills his mistress in a passionate argument, he begins to cover his tracks, realising that an unknown witness has seen him with his mistress. Without knowing who the mystery witness is, Janoth grows increasingly desperate to frame the innocent man seen outside her home just before the murder and puts Stroud in charge of finding the unidentified witness.
