Rent The Invasion (2007)

Something terrifying has come to Earth, something that attacks us while we sleep and turns us into soulless replicants. The clock is ticking as Washington, DC psychiatrist Carol Bennell (Nicole Kidman) and her colleague Ben Driscoll (Daniel Craig) embark on a heart-stopping journey into a nightmarish world where the only way to stay alive is to stay awake. No one can be trusted. No one is safe in producer Joel Silver's bold new take on Jack Finney's classic novel The Body Snatchers. Don't fall asleep! The Invasion is here.

A tame remake of the body snatcher 'genre.' The cast do well with the available script but the "everybody lives happily after," ending is too sugary. The film hints at the worldwide benefits of benevolent control, with an absence of free will, this theme had more legs and could have been further explored. A world without war, terrorism, starvation etc, in exchange for emotions/choice could have been a real challenge for the director, shame.

A solid Sci-FI thriller.

The Invasion' is a fairly solid Sci-Fi thriller, the acting is decent, the direction is solid and the story moves along at a brisk pace. While it's not one of the best of films of all time it's certainly not that bad, where the film does fail is that it does suffer from a lack of tension, moments and scenes that should have you on the edge of your seat come of as a bit flat. That said, if you're running short of titles to add to your rental list then this is well worth a look.

A mess

Another example of Hollywood running short on ideas and remaking previous past classics. Invasion, or Invasion of the Body Snatchers as it should be known is a hollow, glossy reincarnation of the original B-move classic. On paper with the lead actors there is potential here for a decent remake. However the director in his first Hollywood film suffered from problems and the usual producers and marketing men destroying his vision. As it stands this isn't the version of Invasion that the director wanted you to see. It is amazing that the amount of money that went into this and the end result is totally inferior to the original. Even removing that comparison and you have a lukewarm stab at a thriller come science fiction lite experience. However I'm glad I've seen it on DVD, as the ending would have left me feeling especially cheated if I had paid cinema prices for this.

Quite good if you're into Sci-Fi. A bit predictable at times. Kidman and Craig play their roles adequately.
