Rent The Pirates of Penzance (1980)

Gilbert and Sullivan's raucous and comedic operatic tale of Frederic, a 'slave to duty' pirate, and the lowly band of 'orphaned' is captured in all its fun and glory in this never before release production of Pirates of Penzance. Recorded live at the Delacorte Theatre, in Central Park, which was produced by Joseph Papp for the Public Theatre/ New York Shakespeare Festival. Kevin Kline sparkles as the swashbuckling, campy and libidinous Pirate King. Linda Ronstadt, making her theatrical debut, sings her way as the lovely and virginal Mabel; and Rex Smith is Federic, the young pirate who is bound to serve the Pirate King until his 21st birthday, which is days away, but being born on February 29th, Federic is a long way off from being released. Complications arise when Federic falls in love with Mabel and the high-spirited antics ensue. George Rose, playing Mabel's father, is hilariously pompous as 'the very model of a modern Major-General.' The original cast offers the best in this Gilbert and Sullivan romp.
