Rent Valkyrie (2008)

Based on the incredible true story of Colonel Claus von Stauffenberg (Cruise) and his ingenious assassination plot targeting Adolph Hitler, this engrossing thriller reenacts the daring operation to eliminate one of the most evil tyrants the world has ever known.

Better than expected

Tom Cruise does a good job of portraying von Stauffenberg, supported by the usual cast of supporting British actors (plus Eddie Izzard). Even though we all know the outcome, the film maintains a good level of tension throughout. Interesting to wonder how close the plot came to ending the war nearly a year before it actually ended.

Nothing really New

This is an excellent film for someone who does not know the story. Alas being an oldy I was brought up knowing it and for me there was not enough previously unknown detail except I never realised it was a takeover. I was under the impression it was all about assassination. Great acting, great filming, great story just not enough "Gosh, I didn't know that"

Refreshing Production from Hollywood

There is much to admire with Valkyrie in particular the attention to detail, production values and impressive cast. The story itself is well publicised and has been tackled before, so the unfolding events here are no surprise, but Singer tries to put a more detailed, personal slant on the actions of the so called traitors. Tom Cruise throws himself into the role but finds himself in a similar situation to that of The Last Samurai i.e. the whole film just lacks that added touch to elevate it above the norm. Valkyrie is enjoyable viewing but I find myself debating the purpose of this film. Downfall highlights the menace of the regime, while the bomb plot featured in the superior movie The Desert Fox: The Story of Rommel.
