Rent Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait (2006)

Zidane, un portrait du 21e siècle

Acclaimed as one of the greatest football films ever made, 'Zidane: A 21st Century Portrait' is a unique real-time study of one of the beautiful game greatest icons: Zinedine Zidane. During an entire Real Madrid vs. Villareal match before 80,000 fans at the Santiago Bernabeu stadium, 17 movie cameras under the direction of acclaimed cinematographer Darius Khondji were set around the playing field focusing solely on Zidane. With a soundtrack featuring the legend's thoughts and observations and a magnificent score by Scottish rock band Mogwai, this extraordinary feature catches in stunning detail all the drama and excitement of a footballing genius in action.

"But is it art.....?"

I know this film is highly regarded - huge triumph at Cannes, greatest ever football film, etc - but I just didn't get it. I sort of understood the idea of Zidane framed in widescreen created this brooding loner who hardly touches the ball but when he does he creates magic - and the camera work was great (with cuts to TV screens watching the match to remind you this is an arthouse film). But for me it was all too much for ninety minutes. On my Sky Sports TV channel I can already opt to watch football matches using 'playercam' which focuses on a single player during matches. OK - it's more likely to be Robbie Savage than Zidane but what's the difference?

Boring, boring, boring!!

I got this film for my other half as he idolises Zidane. But both of us found the film very boring, and taking Zidane out of the context of the game for me meant that I really didn't see the point of watching the film. Some of the cinematography is great, and the quotes from Zidane during the film gave it slightly more interest. We both preferred the interview with Zidane which was one of the DVDs special features. We were both very disappointed as we were looking forward to the film.
