Synopsis:
Since he was young, salesman Albert Dehousse (Mathieu Kassovitz) wanted to be a hero. Following the liberation of France after the Second World War, Albert leaves his home and wife and sets out for Paris where he befriends a young Captain, Jean Dionnet, and makes the acquaintance of Monsieur Jo (Jean-Louis Trintignant), a collaborator turned Resistance fighter. Albert, already a but of a fibber, begins his life anew with a fully fabricated identity of a daring Resistane hero, based on library research and the war yarns of Monsieur Jo. But his performance so captivates the French upper crust that he's soon way over his head - and holding a key embassadorual position.
A gently comic take on the human need to reinvent oneself, with the lightest satirical touch.

Living Lies - A Self Made Hero review by Johannes

Spoiler Alert

The motto of A Self-Made Hero might well be this: the stories we tell ourselves are often more interesting than the lives we live. Albert Dehousse is led by his imagination, and more importantly, the many opportunities it offers. With unusual indifference to those around him, he moves from one life to the next, inventing new identities in quick succession — and with incredible success. To Albert, heroism is not something to be won in battle, rather something self-made, and like the best storytellers, he wears it well.
