One of the most popular and successful film biographies of the 1940s, Charles Vidor's triumphant portrait of the composer Frederic Chopin is enriched throughout with the maestro's sublime music and was nominated for no less than Six Academy Awards including Best Actor in a Leading Role (1945). Cornel Wilde stars as Frederic Chopin, a young piano prodigy and aspiring composer whose love of his Polish homeland inspires his music and fires his anger against the Czarist tyrants who occupy it. When his rebellious actions threaten his life, Chopin is taken to safety in Paris by his mentor, Joseph Elsnor (Paul Muni). Here he meets the novelist George Sand (Merle Oberon). Under her influence, Chopin becomes an international sensation, playing before adoring audiences throughout Europe. Escapist viewing - A Song to Remember review by CC
Beautiful music. Naff script. Nice to see these oldies now and again and Chopin's music makes it all worthwhile, but the storyline bore little resemblance to his actual experiences and the script showed its age. Worth a look if you like Chopin and you can accept the movie for what it is, a dated, old fashioned Hollywood type version of history.
