Synopsis:
Trouble in Paradise. The first rumblings of American familial discontent in the early '50s came as a shock to the established patriarchal system. Rebellion? In MY household? Of course, the symptoms became most evident only when Vietnam reared its ugly head a few years later; but the groundwork for some serious questions was being laid back then. I clearly recall the spate of 'damage control' efforts that was launched as a counter-offensive - it included some decidedly fire-and-brimstone warnings by the church, a slew of unreal 'back-to-the-basics' articles in leading periodicals...and, of course, a number of short films that were screened in movie houses and on television.
These ranged in content from blatant emotional blackmail to some pretty sensible stuff. The American Cultural History - Family Values DVD from A2ZCDS is a thoughtfully compiled collection of these films, because it effectively represents the multi-faceted approaches described above. The viewer is presented with an accurate cross-section of viewpoints on family values that were popular in the '50s. While some of them are clearly obsolete, it makes for refreshing hindsight study and can teach us a lot about where the family structure we are accustomed to now came from.
