Hercules is both a symbol of civilisation and the very soul of the barbarian - a representation of good and bad, magnified to epic proportions. Born in a primitive age, his legend has spanned more than 3000 years and continues to grow. He was the Superman of the ancient world and his strength of character and many vices were as vast as his physical prowess. His celebrated twelve labours would take him to the ends of the earth and beyond - battling injustice, slaying fearsome creatures, committing thefts and murders, even defying the gods themselves. Of all the Greek heroes Hercules was the only one to be raised to the status of a God and worshipped throughout the ancient world. But despite his divinity and his enormous strength, he was essentially a very human figure, and perhaps because we can see a little bit of ourselves in this epic character his story endures.
