On April 14th 1970, more than 200 thousand miles out in space, an oxygen tank exploded, ripping off a side of the service module and disabling the Odyssey spacecraft. Astronauts James Lovell, John Swigert and Fred Haise had reached the point of no return. To get back safely, the astronauts had to orbit the moon and sling themselves on the correct trajectory back to Earth. All of America watched, waited and prayed for their safe return while scientists, engineers and fellow astronauts created a rescue plan. This programme highlights America's adventures in to space from 1962, when an Atlas rocket successfully carried John Glenn and the hopes of an entire American nation into orbit aboard Friendship 7, a flight that ushered in a new era of space travel that eventually led to Americans walking on the moon by the end of the 1960's, and in to the 70's with the first Space Walk, Skylab and the first reusable space craft the Space Shuttle. Watch all the events leading up to NASA's most dramatic mission Apollo 13, and how a voyage of scientific exploration turned into a matter of survival and one of the Apollo Programme's finest moments. The Apollo 13 mission didn't get to be one of glory, but it did turn out to be a glorious rescue.
