Probably the ultimate slow-burn film, 'Aurora' is the follow-up to 'The Death of Mr Lazarescu', and starts by showing the apparently banal life of an engineer, played by the director Cristi Puiu himself. But the day's incidents are overlain with a growing unease and anxiety. When he buys a shotgun, the slow tension gradually builds.
Brilliant film - if you have time to watch it

The cinematography is brilliant and the plot unfolds slowly before your eyes - as in real life. Only in the last ten minutes do you begin to understand what was going on in the mind of the main character. And there is no clever detective who susses it all out: you have to observe for yourself.
NB Although both discs are advertised as lasting 3 hours, the second disk contains only a trailer and an interview with the director (who is also the lead actor), so not more than 30 minutes in total. The interview is interesting and illuminating but hardly worth a whole DVD rental. So I give the whole thing 4 stars - 5 for DVD1 and 3 for DVD 2.
