Road to Bali (1952)
Having to leave Melbourne in a hurry to avoid various marriage proposals, two song-and-dance men (Hope and Crosby) sign on for work as divers. This takes them to an idyllic island on the way to Bali where they vie with each other for the favours of Princess Lala (Dorothy Lamour). The hazardous dive produces a chest of priceless jewels which arouses the less romantic interest of some shady locals.
Basin Street Revue (1955)This is a collection of exciting R&B performances from the early-mid 1950's, including Cab Calloway, Sarah Vaughn, Martha Davis, Amos Milburn, Faye Adams, Lionel Hampton, The Clovers, Paul Hucklebuck Williams featuring Jimmy Brown on vocal, and Herb Jeffries, among others. The lowbrow comedy from Nipsey Russell and Mantan Moreland helps create a wonderful "revue" feel for the show.
Forbidden Music (1938)
A charming tale, based on an allegedly true story of a 19th century town where a new law forbad music - no instruments or singing allowed - so that the townspeople would concentrate on making money to pay the town's debts.
