In this disturbing psychological thriller, two young girls are attacked on the street by a violent rapist. Muriel (Lisa Langlois) is murdered but her cousin Patricia (Aude Landry) survives. Inspector Carella (Donald Sutherland) soon has a prime suspect - Doniac ( Donald Pleasence) - a known sex offender. He is released when Patricia fails to identify him and Carella turns his attention to Armstrong, a man known to Muriel who fits the description. Muriel's funeral is marked by an emotional outburst from Patricia's brother Andrew (Laurent Malet) and brings a disturbing twist. Patricia now claims that Andrew is the killer and rapist. Carella is forced to confront the dark side of family life with each revelation as he seeks the killer. - Actors:

Time capsule from the 1970s - Blood Relatives review by TE
Claude Chabrol was an incredibly prolific film-maker, so it is not surprising that there are several lesser works amongst his masterpieces.
'Blood Relatives' was released in 1978, and it is strange to note that in the same year he released 'Violette Noziere', one of his finest films. Perhaps 'Blood Relatives' shows that he struggled with the transition from France to America / Canada. It certainly comes across as laboured and 'stiff', unlike his French movies. In many ways it is nothing more than an average TV murder mystery from the 1970s.
The film is based on an Ed McBain novel. Donald Sutherland's presence helps a little, but overall it feels like a low budget, low energy project.
