Synopsis:
The rock star who wants to make a difference.
When Bono and his three band mates first took to the stage together, little could they have realised the incredible heights of success they would achieve. In the early days, U2, like many bands before them, worked the music circuit, gigging in Ireland and steadily growing their fan-base. But everything changed when they took to the world stage alongside rock and pop’s royalty, to play the now legendary Live Aid concert in the summer of 1985. As a result of this performance and his experiences in Ethiopia after it, Bono the rock star rapidly became Bono the spokesman for a world in crisis.
In this programme we hear from Bono’s friends and music colleagues who provide a fascinating insight to the man behind the voice whose selfless work to combat poverty has made huge inroads to a seemingly insurmountable problem.
- Bono's humanitarian work has been recognised in a number of ways. As a public show of appreciation of his tireless efforts he has been nominated 3 times for the Nobel Peace Prize and was granted an honorary knighthood.
- Bono has won numerous awards with U2, including 22 Grammy Awards and the 2003 Golden Globe award for best original song, The Hands That Built America, for the film Gangs of New York.
