- Captain William Kidd (Charles Laughton) is a ruthless and highly successful pirate when in 1699 he persuades the king to allow him to escort a treasure ship from India. With a crew gathered from pardoned cutthroats, it is obvious that the treasure ship stands little chance of arriving safely with its valuable cargo.
