Synopsis:
The footage reveals a country torn apart with civil strife and political unrest - miitary intimidation of the population, indiscriminate arrests, murder, torture and disappearances were facts of Chilean life. Bradbury's film traces the 12 years from 1973 to 1985 of General Augusto Pinochet's dictatorship whose forces seized power in a bloody, US-backed coup that left the democratically elected Marxist president Salvador Allende dead, and with him any hopes of democracy remaining in Chile. The filmmaker's time in Chile culminates with a poignant sequence near the end of the film when an architect and teacher are kidnapped and murdered by Pinochet's secret police.
The outpouring of emotion by the man's son, a wife and the nation is an unforgettable moment in the film. Chile: Hasta Cuando? (when will it end?) reveals the tragedy of a divided country, a country on the verge of eruption.
