Chinese Ballet: The Bright Red Lanterns Hung High (2008)

Chinese ballet based on the 1991 film of the same name. Set in Shanghai in the 1920's, during the warlord era, the story tells of a young woman who becomes the fourth concubine of a wealthy man, living in a lavish estate. She is, at first, treated like royalty but soon finds out that she has to compete against the other concubines for the attention of the master. As the competiton between the women becomes more dangerous, the beautiful estate becomes a prison in the young girl's eyes.
