Warm, touching, and full of pathos. - Cruise of the Gods review by CP Customer

Spoiler Alert
28/01/2006

Yet another of those one off BBC comedy drama's that seemed to be shown once never to be repeated again; 'Cruise Of The Gods' revolves around the character of 'Andy Van Allen' (Rob Brydon), a has been actor who, in his hey-day was the star of a cult 1980's low budget TV Sci-Fi show called 'The Children Of Castor'. Now an out of work actor reduced to working as a hotel porter, and with the offer of some quick cash and a free holiday, he reluctantly agrees to appear at a 'Children Of Castor' fan convention which is taking place on a Mediterranean cruise ship. As well as having to relive his part of a dire TV show he would rather forget and mixing with adoring fans who he doesn't really like, to his horror he finds himself upstaged by the surprise appearance of his old 'Children Of Castor' co-star 'Nick Lee' (Steve Coogan), who unlike Andy has gone on to be a Hollywood star and also in the Mediterranean on location filming a 'Sherlock Holmes in Miami' Christmas special. As a comedy it isn't laugh out loud funny, but it's a warm, touching, humorous drama, full of pathos, about a man coming to terms with and embracing both his past and the man is today.
