In August 1944, Field Marshal Montgomery launched an audacious campaign to trap the German 5th and 7th Panzer Armies in Lower Normandy, forming a ring of steel around them with American, British, Canadian and Polish armour. The increasingly encircled German forces however, comprised some of the toughest and most battle-hardened units in Hitler's Army - and what would become known as the 'Falaise Gap' became synonymous carnage. German forces fought desperately to escape - and even counter-attack. The narrow country lanes and their high hedgerows proved a killing ground for tanks. Allied Typhoons, Spitfires, P-47s and Mustangs blasted the Germans with rockets day after day - until even the pilots high above the once tranquil French countryside complained about the overwhelming stench of death...
