Synopsis:
Good-guy law student Harper (Tye Sheridan) obsesses that step-dad Vincent (Stephen Moyer) is responsible for the car crash that has left his mum in a coma, and makes a drunken deal one night to have him killed for $20,000 by random tough guy Johnny Ray (Emory Cohen). The next day Johnny Ray turns up on Harper's doorstep, with his girlfriend Cherry (Bel Powley) in tow, ready to drive them to Las Vegas to complete the deal. Harper's claims he was drunk when he hired him fall on deaf ears and he realises he might not be able to change course; he's already chosen the road he's travelling on and needs to carry on down it, even if there's clearly danger up ahead...

Modern film noir - Detour review by Alphaville

Spoiler Alert
18/11/2017

This Nevada-set thriller is a real poser. Writer/director Christopher Smith uses split screen and divided plot lines (similar to Sliding Doors) to tell his nourish tale of a seedy trio of characters on the make. There are times when the conceit causes the plot to lose focus, but stick with it if you’re in the mood for a film that’s both intelligent and a puzzle. Chris thinks it’s his best film, but it’s not a patch on the brilliant Triangle.
